AlumniThe Massachusetts Bay League started with 7 schools in 1977. Thirty years later, the League has grown to 25 member schools. Over the years, thousands of high school sailors have raced under the banner of the League. While most have sailed without much fanfare, all of them have developed skills that will last them a lifetime. Our student-sailors have learned much more than just the task of sailing a boat. They have learned to work as a team, skipper and crew within the boat, and as part of a three-boat team in team racing. Each of our student-sailors has developed the self-confidence that comes from taking on the weather and the rest of the fleet each day. Since we ask them to care for the boat as if they owned it and to teach others what they already know, many of our student-sailors have also developed a strong sense of personal responsibility. The independence and self-reliance that they developed by sailing in the challenging conditions of New England will serve them well throughout life. As they compete to win, we encourage them to do so with integrity and sportsmanship. Although developed while sailing, each of these traits - teamwork, independence, self-reliance, self-confidence, responsibilty, integrity, sportsmanship - carry over into their lives as students and later as adults. That so many young people have benefitted so is probably the most significant accomplishment of the League. Some of our student-sailors have been quite successful in high school and have gone onto further success in college and beyond. A few of our alumni have become All-Americans in college or have won National Championships. We share the pride of their accomplishments since they got their start within the League.
To all of our alumni, we would like to hear from you. Tell us about your experiences in the League and
how that has affected you. Let us know if you're still sailing, if and where you sailed in college, if
you have taught others to sail. Send us an email at
